Ben dropped Coop back at his office and they promised to keep in touch with developments. Coop removed his jacket and shirt and added a pair of shorts to his politically incorrect t-shirt and plopped into his chair, palming a handful of M&M’s.

He settled in and spent the rest of the day trying to connect dots between Gray and the remaining names on the guest list. Gray wasn’t involved in the lobbying efforts at Global, so he didn’t have any direct links to the politicians or the lobbyists. Mel and another executive in Nashville handled the lobbying. Gray had relationships with lobbyists in California, but Coop couldn’t connect any of them to Nashville.

He looked up from his computer and files when Annabelle came in with his lunch. “You need to take a break and eat something. I fixed you a plate of leftovers from your aunt’s picnic supper.”

He glanced at his watch and saw it was already mid-afternoon. “Looks good, thanks.” She took the couch and brought him up to date on their other cases while he ate. He offered her a cookie and she took it and smiled as Gus camped out at her feet. “He knows you’re a soft touch.”

“Yeah, I know. I can’t resist. I don’t give him much and avoid the chocolate chunks.” She bent over to reward Gus with a nibble and got a quick lick on the nose as a thank you.

“I’ve gone over and over this list and can’t tie Grey to anyone who could be a suspect. It’s driving me nuts.”

The phone rang and Annabelle hurried to chew her bite of cookie before reaching for the phone on Coop’s desk. She put the call on hold. “Taylor Nelson’s on the phone for you.”

Coop stuffed the remaining chunk of his cookie in his mouth and nodded. Gus followed Annabelle out as she shut the door.

Coop answered the line and Taylor asked if he could stop by and talk. He had the use of his mom’s car for a few hours and was hoping Coop was available. Coop agreed to meet within the hour.

Coop hung up and cleaned up his lunch mess. “Hey, AB, do we still have some cookies left?”

“They’re in the kitchen. Don’t tell me you’re still hungry?”

“No, I’m fine. Taylor’s on his way over and I figured he might want a few.”

“I’ll get a plate ready and put it in your office. I wonder what he wants.”

“He didn’t say.” Coop picked up his notes and lists and cleared off the table. He refilled his iced tea and sat on the couch in reception, waiting for Taylor.

Annabelle busied herself with some filing. “Any big plans for the weekend with Shelby?” she asked.

“No, no plans, big or otherwise, and Shelby’s history.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. She was just a date, nothing serious. I keep finding myself with the wrong type of woman. I need to find someone more my speed, with my interests, and not so needy and clingy.” He shook his head. “What about you? Are you doing anything fun this weekend?”

She continued filing folders.
